Supernova 2006ci

SN 2006ci was the eleventh supernova found by the BRASS team. This SN is located in galaxy ESO 182-010, at R.A. 18o18'28.67", Dec -54o41'45.6" (2000.0). SN 2006ci was discovered on 2006 May 18.20 UT through images made at the CEAMIG-REA Observatory at Belo Horizonte, Brazil, and confirmed by CBET 513 and IAUC 8713.

ESO 182-010 is a spiral galaxy belonging to morphological class SAB(r)bc. According to NASA Extragalactic Database (NED), its recession speed and redshift are 3549 km/s e 0.011838, respectively. Those figures imply in a distance of about 50.7 megaparsec (close to 165 million light years), assuming a value of 70 km/s.Mpc for the Hubble constant. Given that estimated distance plus the apparent magnitude at discovery (15.1), we may estimate the absolute magnitude of SN 2006ci as -18.8, also at discovery. Spectra of this SN, required to determine its type, were not available at the time this text is being written.
